How Reclaimed Teak Tells a One Hundred Year Old Story

Incredibly, our reclaimed teak started its life as a sturdy construction material in Indonesia up to 100 hundreds years ago.

Unfortunately, widespread deforestation crippled the indigenous teak forests of South East Asia, often being stripped bare to fuel the insatiable appetite in Europe and the US for teak furniture.

Our design partner, S2dio, found a niche.

They started producing teak patio furniture from teak salvaged from old houses that were being torn down.

The sense of long history is evident in the recycled wood construction. This special feeling is characterised by visible marks, scratches and almost unnoticeable tiny splits which all meld together to bring a vintage charm to the old classic material.

All of which tell a tale of the teak's previously life...

Interestingly tiny cracks are part of the teak garden furniture's natural fabric and pose no quality concerns.

Another brilliant invention from mother nature is the natural tannins and anti-pesticide agents that are inherent in the teak, these prevent wood rot and make the reclaimed teak maintenance free.

Teak will form a vintage silver patina on the surface as it's exposed to sunlight over time. This is perfectly normal and for some connoisseurs of designer garden furniture is a welcomed transformation which prove the teak's originality.

So now you know what to expect from reclaimed wooden furniture, what kind of designer furniture is available? Well the answer is very little on the high street as most of the larger furniture retailers struggle to source enough volume of reclaimed wood to make it commercially viable for them. Online boutique furniture companies are a great avenue to find some garden furniture options, take a sneak peak below at some of our selections:

The Aruba 8 seater garden dining set is made up of 8 supreme quality hand woven wicker chairs and a glorious chunky recycled teak table. The beauty about this set is it's been graced with a seawash finish which brings out a natural silver look, which will be the eventual finish of the table once it's been bleached by the sun over many years. Its designed for the connoisseurs of teak who prefer the silver patina finish and is available for £1999, not the cheapest set in the world but guaranteed to last you a lifetime.

Care Guide: Outdoor Furniture

Strange as it may sound, furniture care in fact begins before you choose which piece to buy. By considering how a garden side table or teak bench can be cared for, even before you make your purchase, you will give it the best chance of a long and happy life. For example, if you know you won’t have the patience to primp and preen your patio furniture then you might be best off with a very low-maintenance piece. However, if you have the time and the knack for a bit of light sanding and varnishing then you can confidently opt for a set which may require just a little more care.

Our 2014 Garden Furniture Range - Something for Everyone

To the uninitiated, talk of garden furniture may conjure visions of cheap plastic sunloungers, boring wooden benches or even those lurid floral parasols - the kind that wouldn’t look out of place miniaturised and bobbing up and down in an equally lurid sugary summer cocktail. The more experienced among us will no doubt have perused the aisles of certain DIY stores, confused by row upon row of bland deckchairs and rickety wooden tables. And then there are the true garden furniture connoisseurs who will certainly have visited high-end garden centres with their landscape architect or interior designer.
