Out & Out Insider - LDF 2016
September in my mind is a new start. Back to school, new clothes hitting the shops, weather beginning to turn and importantly for those of us interested in Design, it’s when the capital is besieged by all-things Interiors. London Design Week provides a platform for the launch of new concepts, trends and products that will soon be making their way into our homes.
The number of events and exhibitions taking place is quite overwhelming when faced with the official guide. But I cherry picked a few of my trusted favourite places (Chelsea Harbour Design Centre, 100% Design, South Brompton Design District, Burberry Makers House, Design Junction, London Design Biennale and Tent) and this is what became apparent.
Colour - Blues, Blushes and Green
So how can these translate into you home? Cladding your walls in prismatic concrete tiles would certainly be a bold architectural choice. And one for which I wish I had a spare wall for..… more realistically though, there were some wonderful wallpapers being presented. Ranging from painterly florals to highly textural surfaces echoing natural elements, all of which would make a fabulous tactile backdrop to any space. But by adding some softer flooring options underfoot or splashing a few colourful cushions across your sofa makes for an easier trend transition if a full decorating makeover isn’t on the cards.
Texture
Upholstery decisions can often be a conundrum however opting for textured finishes or a combination of solid tones delivers detail to a space without committing to living with pattern, which might in time lose its appeal. By incorporating striking lighting choices, you can create subtle divisions within a space. These handmade pendants lend a desirable crafted feel and a delicate addition of colour. Whilst these sculptural table lamps will add a focal point to any sideboard or desk area.
So whilst you’re wiling away time in your softly lit reading nook, why not take time to admire perfectly coordinated accessories on an elegant occasional table or artwork adorning your (wallpapered?) wall.
Accessorise
Perhaps spare a moment for jotting down your to-do list in a suitably matched notebook. Japanese artist Yasuhiro Suzuki explored the delicacy of balancing colour seen here with his pencil crayon installation (not to be used for your to-do list). Subtle gradations of colour always appeal to me and Sue Pryke’s teaspoons are that beautiful combination of a functional aesthetic. Admittedly these are too precious for your cutlery drawer but they would look splendid displayed as a collection. Continuing the trend in colour blending, the installation of rotating silicone cords at the V&A was a stunning example of where design & art merge in order to immerse the viewer in a mesmerising wave of colour.
Lifestyle
So a new season of tones can easily be achieved in varying degrees but if you really want to embrace it wholeheartedly, update your wardrobe courtesy of Burberry who’s SS17 collection was understandably bang on trend. Even their carpets.
