Five Lounge Furniture Trends at the Milan Furniture Fair 2014

The Milan Furniture Fair or ‘Salone del Mobile’ took place last month to celebrate and showcase Italian-made interior products. An annual trade only event, the 2014 exhibition was attended by over 350,000 visitors from 160 countries, including the Italian Prime Minister. Claudio Luti, president of the Salone del Mobile said of this year’s event:

“Buyers, journalists and designers have seen at first hand just how superlative and creative our production chain is, recognising the value of made in Italy manufacturing and the global importance of the Salone.”

Founder of Out & Out Original, Daniel Fairburn attended the world class event, and here he gives us a rundown of the top five trends that he identified in lounge furniture design:

  1. Bucket Chairs

Bucket chairs were a major trend in Milan, both in rounded, curved shapes and flatter armless versions. Generally they were combined with wooden legs and many had a mid century feel about them.

2. Mid Century Modern Designs

This trend is hot in general but there were some very nice remakes from this era, most notably retro armchairs.

3. Nesting Tables

Every booth seemed to have their own set of nesting tables, mostly in wood with accent colours. Some of the tables on display were contemporary, whereas others were inspired by classic retro side tables.

4. Steel Wire Work

Some very nice steel wire work featured at the fair. The hard, cool lines of the steel were combined with soft, cosy-looking upholstery which made these pieces extremely comfortable.

5. Vertical Storage

This was done to great effect and this was a definite trend in the high-end exhibits. Interestingly, most of what was stored in these stylish shelves was inaccessible, but they give a real feeling of grandeur and space when you are in the environment.

If you like these trends as much as we do, then you will probably love our mid century inspired living room furniture and may enjoy reading our Buyers Guide to Sofas or Storage Furniture. We hope you fnd them useful - if you have any questions about our collections or about how to care for your Out & Out Original piece, then please do get in touch.
